The Wonderful David Hewlett

Born in Surrey, England, David was raised in Canada, attending high school in Toronto. It was here that he first appeared on the silver screen, starring in films made by fellow student, Vincenzo Natali. (Vincenzo later went on to write and direct Cube, Cypher, Nothing and Splice.)

Dropping out of high school to pursue careers in computing and acting, David appeared in several movies and TV shows, including a recurring role as Nicky in Kung Fu: The Legend Continues.

In 1996, David began one of his most well known roles, that of Grant Jansky in the Canadian series Traders. It was this role that saw him receive two Gemini award nominations for Best Performance in a Featured Supporting Role.

A self-confessed science fiction - and especially Doctor Who - fan, David realised his desire to further work in the genre when he took on the guest role of Dr Rodney McKay in Stargate: SG-1. The fan reaction to the character eclipsed expectations and what began as a three episode guest stint in SG-1 became the second male lead role in spin-off show, Stargate: Atlantis.

Even kept busy with the arrogant astrophysicist, David still has time to branch out further with the release of his award-winning directorial debut, A Dog's Breakfast. A labour of love between him and his wife, Jane Loughman, A Dog's Breakfast not only reunites several Stargate cast members, but also sees another member of the Hewlett family try his paws at acting as Mars, the rottweiler-terrier cross that David and Jane adopted from their local animal shelter, takes the title role.  A Dog's Breakfast is currently available for order at Amazon.com here (R1 only) or for download via their Unbox Video Download here, and also at iTunes here.  An international release is expected sometime soon.

However, from soldier to derivatives expert, from herpetologist to medical examiner, Rodney McKay remains David's most popular role to date. Unfortunately, the fifth season of Atlantis was the last, although it is hoped that eventually a TV movie might be made so fingers crossed we have yet to see the last of the snarky scientist who keeps the city running!  We wish David all the very best for whatever new adventures await him in the future.
